: Sonophotocatalytic degradation of Methylene Blue using synthesized M@TiO2 Nanocomposites (M = Ag, Pd, Au, Pt)

: In this work we present a simple method for preparing doped TiO2 by using sol-gel method and studies on its properties on photocatalysis. Nobel metal (Ag, Au, Pd and Pt) doped titania is prepared by sol-gel method using titanium tetraisopropoxide. The synthesized materials are characterized using FTIR, Raman, and XRD. The synthesised pure TiO2 contains only the anatase phase and the same is present in the dopants. Undoped TiO2 has a crystallite size of 19.47 nm which is higher than the doped TiO2 samples. The addition of dopants to the TiO2 has restricted the direct contact between the grains and prevented the growth thereby decreasing the crystallite size. Gold doped TiO2 has the highest degradation efficiency of 96.48% within 240 min, it also has a rate constant of 12.51 x 10-3 min-1 and a t1/2 value of 53 min. It is evident from the kinetic parameters that doping has enhanced the catalytic activity except for platinum. The catalytic activity was in the order of Au doped TiO2 > Pd doped TiO2 > Ag doped TiO2 > undoped TiO2 > Pt doped TiO2 at 0.05% metal loading.
