Abstract : The kinetics of the reaction between sodium periodate and [CrIII(edda)(H2O)2]+ (edda = ethylenediamine-N, N'-diacetate) in aqueous solutions have been studied spectrophotometrically at 5.74 – 7.11 pH range, 20 – 40 oC and 0.20 M ionic strength. The reaction rate has been found to obey the following equation: Rate = ketK3[CrIII]T[IVII]T/{1 + ([H+]/K1) + K3[IVII]T} where ket is rate constant for the electron transfer process, K1 is the dissociation constant of [CrIII(edda)(H2O)2]+ to [CrIII(edda)(H2O)(OH)] + H+ and K3 is the pre-equilibrium formation constant. The thermodynamic activation parameters are reported. It is proposed that electron transfer proceeds via an inner- sphere mechanism with the hydroxo ligand of the chromium(III) complex bridging the two reactants.
