: Photochemical study of PVC filmes in presence of 2-[4-2)-methyl propyl) phenyl] propanoate complexes

: Some metal complexes of the ligand potassium2-[4-2)-methyl propyl) phenyl] propanoate acid with the metal ions Cu(II), Cd(II), Sn(II), Zn(II) and Ni(II) are described. The synthesized complexes have been characterized in solid state by using FTIR, UV-visible spectrophotometry, melting point, conductivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The ligand acted as bidentate and coordinated to the metal atoms via the deprotonated carboxylate group. From the spectral studies, Square planar geometry was proposed for the copper complex. The other complexes were proposed to be octahedral. The photostabilization of poly(vinyl chloride) films by prepared complexes was investigated. The PVC films containing concentration of complexes 0.5% by weight were produced by the casting method from tetrahydrofuran (THF) solvent. The photodegradation of the obtained films was investigated using UV-vis. spectra. The photostabilization activity of these compounds was determined by calculating the photodecomposition rate constant (kd) for the modified PVC.
